Digital Signature in Uruguay: Modernizing Notarial Procedures

Law No. 18,600 recognizes the validity of electronic and digital signatures in Uruguay, granting them the same legal effectiveness as a handwritten signature when they meet the established technical requirements.

What is a digital signature?

Unlike a simple electronic signature, the digital signature uses a digital certificate issued by an accredited Certification Service Provider (CSP), guaranteeing authenticity, integrity, and non-repudiation of the document.

How to obtain one

  1. Request a token or cryptographic device from a CSP such as Correo Uruguayo or Abitab.
  2. Verify your identity in person with a valid identity document.
  3. Install the provided software and associate the digital certificate with your browser.

Uses in the notarial field

Authorized notaries can sign electronic deeds, certificates, and testimonies, reducing processing times and enabling digital archiving in public registries.

"The digital signature streamlines operations such as real estate transactions and mortgages, improving document traceability and legal certainty."

To verify a digital signature, anyone can use the official state validator.
